From 1969 until late 1979 the Institute maintained a Center in Tehran with a resident American director.  In addition to providing hostel facilities and the means of bringing together American and Iranian colleagues, the director formally represented American scholars and students to the Iranian government in all official matters connected with the pursuit of research in Iran.

In 1979 political difficulties between the governments of Iran and the United States resulted in the withdrawal of the resident American director and the closing of the Tehran Center.  Currently, a resident American director who serves also as the six-month fellow resides in Tehran for periods of six months, overseeing the programs there.
